Samsung is not fully
comfortable, because the percentage of Korean manufacturers' market share has
also been eroded by the previous difference of 12% in the first quarter to only
6% compared to Huawei. Two superior products from competition in this
smartphone industry, namely
Samsung Galaxy Note 9 and Huawei Mate 20 pro. This article certainly does not
describe the quality of products from each vendor as a whole, but the flagship
product certainly deserves to be the ideal representation.
Design
Both vendors seem to agree that scratch-resistant tough glass on both sides (front-rear), is the most ideal material choice for presenting a flagship class premium product. Because, the Note 9 and Mate 20 pro use glass material on both sides, with light metal as a frame around it.
Physically, the Note 9 is bigger than the Mate 20, both in length, width and thickness, whereas, the Mate 20 pro has a more rounded shape at the four corners. Regarding the presence of physical buttons and a number of holes or ports around the frame, the Mate 20 pro looks much more minimalist than Note 9 with only the power button, volume settings, and USB type C port. While the Note 9, besides the Mate 20 pro, This phone is also equipped with a special Bixby button, an S-Pen storage slot, a 3.5 mm audio jack port, and a loudspeaker hole divider.
This minimalist appearance was successfully applied to the design of the Mate 20 pro, one of which is by hiding the load speaker into the USB Type-C port. The most obvious difference is to show the identity of both on the back side, especially in the main camera area. In Note 9, there are 2 main camera lenses, LED flash and a heart rate sensor that are horizontally based, plus a fingerprint scanner that is placed below the line.
It's different with the Mate 20 pro. This phone carries 3 main cameras that are arranged together with a dual tone flash with a 2x2 configuration that forms a square right in the middle-top area on the Mate 20 pro's plate. Thus the balance in the design of the Pro 20 Mate is maintained. You will not see firsthand the presence of a fingerprint scanner on the pro Mate 20, because Huawei applies the in-Display Fingerprint Scanner technology that is sophisticated on this one champion.
Among a number of differences, the two phones have one thing in common: IP68 water and dust certification that has both.
Screen
In the Display sector, the two phones adopt AMOLED display panels. So that in general the character of the display of both colors is not much different. Sharp image details, colors are harmonized more comfortably. Although the physical Note 9 is significantly larger than the Mate 20 pro, the fact is that the Note 9 screen is only slightly larger with just 0.01 inches difference compared to the Milim Mate 20 pro. This is because, the success of Huawei to more leverage utilize the front side of the Mate 20 pro as a screen area.
The Mate 20 pro screen occupies 87.9% of the front side, while the Note 9's screen ratio is only around 83.4 from the front. Not only that, although the size is slightly smaller the screen of the Mate 20 pro actually has a high resolution. This automatically makes the pixel density on the Mate 20 pro screen more dense (538 ppi vs 516ppi)
OS and UI
According to the timeline, the Note 9 has tempted the public longer than the pro Mate 20 who attended 3 months later. But this is actually beneficial for the Mate 20 pro, because thus Huawei can read the lack of rivals and perfect the Mate 20 pro.
One of them is by including the latest version of Android Pie (9.0) directly on the Mate 20 pro system, while on the Note 9, reportedly using in some regions has got an update to Pie, but during the testing period, until now there has been no update notification.
Although both are running Android, but each cell phone is wrapped with a typical interface between the two manufacturers. Note 9 with Samsung Experience 9.5, while Mate 20 pro with EMUI 9.0. reportedly, updating android Pie on the Note 9 will later include the latest Samsung UI, one UI.
The second displays a multi panel homescreen. The difference is, on the Note 9 there is an AppDrawer that holds all the applications installed on this phone, so that the application displayed on the Homescreen panel is only considered important. Editing the Mate 20 pro interface is simpler by displaying all the applications you have, directly on the homescreen.
The leftmost panel is dedicated to special features, Bixby Home on the Note 9 and the Google feed on the Mate 20 Pro. Its function is not much different, namely displaying a number of information that is considered important by the user. This information displayed in this panel is automatically selected by the smart system that is owned by each cellphone.
Featured Features
As the highest grade superior product for each factory, the Note 9 and Mate 20 pro certainly have distinctive features. Note 9, for example, this phone has a number of features to complement the stylus typical of the Galaxy Note Series, S-Pen, which it has. In this latest generation S-Pen, Samsung utilizes Bluetooth Low-energy (BLE) technology to make long-distance connections with Note 9. Thus users can use S-Pen to control Note 9 from a distance (up to 10 meters)
The control function can be utilized, among others, as a remote shutter to take photos, a remote to pause a video played on youtube, replace the slide when making a presentation and so on. Users can even make arrangements so that the buttons on the S-Pen can be used as a shortcut to directly open certain applications. By default, by holding down the button on the S-Pen, the Note 9 will open the camera feature.
There is also an air command,
which adds to the S-Pen function. For example, the user simply directs the tip
of the S-Pen to a foreign language writing to translate it by selecting
Translate on the air command. In addition to translate, Air command member a
number of options by default including Notes, smart select, screen write, and
Pen Up. Users can even add features or application shortcuts to Commad air.
Mate 20 pro is certainly no less interesting, as a mobile phone that carries Android Pie by default, is a number of features that become the characteristics of Android Pie, especially features that are part of the "Digital wellbeing" project made by Google. This project itself is a form of Google's responsibility to overcome the problem of technology addiction.
Among the features included is the App Dashboard feature will inform the user, how many times the phone is turned on (unlock), the number of notifications that come in, so how much time is spent on each application. Users can even specify the time limit for using each application. Besides the App Dashboard, there is a Night Light or Wind Down Mode feature. This one feature will reduce the habit of using cellphones at night, especially before going to bed. The trick, when approaching the night's rest, the display on the mobile screen loses color and slowly becomes gray.
This is a reminder for users that it's time to sleep. In addition, the black and white appearance is relatively safer for eye health at night. And most importantly, a display like this will make any application that is being used to lose its appeal which slowly invites sleepiness. Both features of the Mate 20 pro through Digital balance settings that can be accessed on: Settings menu> Digital Balance> Screen Time Management.
Hardware
In addition to using the latest OS version, the emergence of the late Mate 20 compared to the Note 9 makes it equipped with a series of more advanced hardware. The pro Mate 20 already uses a 7 nanometer fabrication technology chipset made by Hisilicon (a Huawei subsidiary), the kirin 980. While, the Note 9 circulating in Indonesia also uses its own manufacturer, the Exynos 9810. It's just that the Note 9 chipset is still built on 10 fabrications nm.
As is known, smaller fabrications allow fabrication of semi conductors to be able to embed more transistors on the chip. In Kirin 980, it is said that Hisilicon is able to compile around 6.9 billion transistors in an area measuring only 1 cm square. This certainly contributes greatly to significant performance improvements. The 7 nm technology itself is claimed to be able to deliver 15% -20% faster performance and 40% better power savings than chipsets that use 10 nm fabrication.
Another innovation presented by kirin 980 is the division of 8 cores into the CPU into 3 clusters for different performance and power efficiency needs. The first cluster consists of 2 2.6 GHz based cores that will work on various processes that require spontaneous and intensive performance. Then in the second cluster there are 2 cores with a slightly lower speed of 1.92 GHz which will handle processes that require continuous performance, but are more energy efficient. And the last of the remaining 4 cores has a speed of 1.8 GHz in each core. This cluster takes care of light processes or activities of applications running in the background, with very high power efficiency
On the other hand, 8 cores
owned by Exynos 9810 are divided into 2 clusters, 4 high speed cores (2.7 GHz)
and 4 cores for lower power efficiency (1.8GHz). in general, the two mobile phones
actually provide a very satisfying performance as expected from a cellphone in
the flagship class.
Photo Camera
A flagship cellphone should appear to be maximal in all sectors. Moreover, the main feature, one of them is the camera. And these two phones certainly carry powerful specifications and features in this sector. Note 9 is equipped with a dual main camera with 12 MP configuration (wide angle, super pixel dual pixel, dual aperture (f / 1.5 - f / 2.4) + 12 MP (Telephotr, F / 2.4) while on the front side, Note 9 with camera 8 MP with openings f / 1.7.
The Mate 20 pro on the other hand, carries 3 main cameras at once with 40 MP specifications (f / 1.8, wide angle) + 20 MP (f / 2.2, ultrawide) + 8 MP (f / 2.4 telephoto) plus a single camera on the front side specifications 24 MP (f / 2.0, wide). From this specification, the Mate 20 pro seems to provide more options to suit the user's needs. Judging from the amount of resolution, the Mate 20 pro is clearly superior. Similarly, when viewed from the size of the main camera sensor (1 / 2.55 inches versus 1 / 1.7 inches), Mate 20 pro has a more massive sensor, allowing it to accommodate more light information that produces photos with better detail.
While if you want to capture a wider viewing area the user simply zooms out to 0.6X size which automatically makes the main camera move using the 20 MP ultra-wide lens that is owned. Want to capture objects that are farther away without having to step closer to them, the Mate 20 pro is also superior superior because the telephotic lens has optical zoom capabilities of up to 5X, while the Telephoto Note 9 lens is only limited to 2X. however, if combined with digital zoom capabilities, both phones are capable of enlarging up to 10X.
